Trip Highlights

Overview

Reykjanes peninsula is very close to Reykjavík but still so very different and even more different from other popular daytours like the Golden Circle and the South Coast. The volcanic and geothermal activity has shaped a landscape that reminds you of the moon – if you have ever been there that is?

Seltún or Krýsuvík geothermal area with all the colors and the hissing sound that constantly reminds you of the power hidden below. Short drive from there the very black and new lavafield from Fagradalsfjall mountain / Geldingadalir eruption in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

If there is a typical fishing village in Iceland, Grindavík would be the winner. Almost everything here is about fish as you will see while we drive through on our way to Brimketill lava pool where according to a folkstorie trolls use to take a bath. From trolls to ghosts since our next stop is Gunnuhver hot spring where Gunna is stuck for eternity.

Bridge between the continents is a bridge which will let you “cross” from Europe to America in seconds – and not passport control. Here you will understand why Iceland is so very active in terms of volcanic and geothermal activity.

Eldvörp crater row said to remind many of Lakagígar in the highland of Iceland and not without a reason – erupted around 800 years ago and still geothermal activity around. Why not use to to cook a iceland hot dog before we head back to Reykjavik?

What's Included

Itinerary

  • After pickup at your accommodation about 30 min drive to the scenic route of Kleifarvatn lake (closed few days in peak winter months) where we will stop at a viewpoint
  • Seltún / Krýsuvík geothermal area is 10 minutes away – get prepared to find words for some of the colours here
  • Around 20 minutes drive to the newest lavafield here in Iceland – from the Geldingadalir / Fagradalsfjall eruption in 2021, 2022 and 2023
  • Very short drive to the fishing village of Grindavík where we can make a comfort stop and drive by the harbour area
  • Brimketill lava pool is a rugged “cold tub” unlike our many hot tubs but on a very beatiful seafront
  • Only about 10 minutes away is the Gunnuhver hot spring geothermal area and our next stop – beware of the ghost of Gunna so she will not pull you in….
  • The bridge between the continents lies only few minutes drive away, a rather cool place where you can almost jump between Europe and America….or the plates at least
  • Last stop of the day (could be closed due to snow in peak winter months) is Eldvörp crater row where we will cook us a hot dog in one of the steam vents
  • Heading back to your accommodation in Reykjavik which is about a 40 min drive
